Tozer on God’s Attributes

A.W Tozer does it again:

“To magnify any attribute (of God) to the exclusion of another is to head for one of the dismal swamps of theology; and yet we are all constantly tempted to do just that.

For instance, the Bible teaches that God is love; some have interpreted this in such a way as virtually to deny that He is just, which the Bible also teaches.  Others press the Biblical doctrine of God’s goodness so far that it is made to contradict His holiness.  Or they make His compassion cancel out His truth.  Still others understand the sovereignty of God in a way that destroys or at least greatly diminishes His goodness and love.

We can hold a correct view of truth only by daring to believe everything God has said about Himself.”

That deserves a 7-fold Amen!

  1. In recent years, it’s been popular to say things like: “The stories in the Old Testament can’t be true because they conflict with what we know of God in the New Testament.” I agree with Tozer; we have to learn to live with everything that God says about himself, even if it conflicts with what we think we already know.

    Grace and peace,
    Tim

Tim, I appreciate you, even though you are a commie, America-hating, liberal….

that quote is going in my book. I mean the Tozer quote, not what I just said about you

  3. You’re writing a book? Am I in it? 😉

Great quote. So true. Wrestling with a lot of this lately. God is so much more than we could ever imagine, and I hate it when we try to limit Him or place Him in a box. In reality, we cannot do that-but we sure do seem to try. He is more amazing and sovereign than we could ever imagine!!!

  4. You are writing a book?! Am I in it?! 😉

Great quote. So true. Been wrestling with a lot of this lately. God is more amazing and sovereign than our human minds could ever imagine, and I hate it when we try to limit Him by putting Him in this box or that. In reality, He cannot be limited-so why do we even try? We need to let God be God, ALL that He is-especially all of that we cannot comprehend or understand!

  5. Speaking of amazing…it would seem that all of our friends’ blogs are linked over there to the left except a certain someone’s…ahem. Am I not good enough for you?! 😉
